  • Introduction
    1. Purpose of the site
The purpose of Study-Now is to provide language training in English as a second language. The site, which at the time of writing includes one main Business English course and a number of short courses, is primarily directed at people wishing to learn English for career or business reasons.

    2. Site creators/corporate ownership

The site was created by the team at Kyunet Pty., Ltd. In Japan, sales are made through our affiliate Trans-Asia Inc. In other countries, sales are through Kyunet.

    3. Courses
The Study-Now site includes our main Business English course, which at the time of writing includes 200 lessons (each lesson is equivalent to approximately one hour of tuition), and five short courses, each of which contains five lessons.

  • Signup
    1. Company signup
Companies, schools or other organizations wishing to purchase a Study-Now course should go to the Company Signup Page, which is accessible from the home page (www.study-now.com). You will then be asked to contact one of our Account Managers, who will assist you in completing the signup process.

    2. Individual signup
Individuals wishing to purchase a Study-Now course should go to the Individual Signup Page, which is accessible from the home page (www.study-now.com). You will be asked to provide some details (see our Privacy Policy) to help you make your purchase. Should you have any difficulties, you may contact us at signup@study-now.com.

    3. Signup levels
The main Business English course on Study-Now offers three signup levels. Each level provides access to all online content, but the two higher levels of DTI and LTI provide other privileges, including teacher interaction.
      1. Standalone
This is the basic level, and provides the student with access to all online content. Students have access to the main course content, determined by the number of units they purchase, as well as to the practice drills. Since the content is highly interactive and includes substantial audio and video for speaking and listening practice, this level is highly effective for students wishing to improve their English skills. The cost effectiveness of the Standalone level means that it is also ideal for schools and companies, either as a complete course or as a supplement to existing English language training.

      2. DTI
DTI stands for “Delayed Teacher Interaction.” At this level, students have access to all the features of the Standalone level, and in addition have the opportunity to complete writing exercises, which are then marked by teachers and returned with a score and feedback. This course is ideal for students seeking to enhance their written communication skills.

      3. LTI
The highest level, LTI stands for “Live Teacher Interaction.” At this level, students have access to all the features of the DTI level, and in addition have the opportunity for live one-on-one instruction with professional teachers. This instruction takes the form of one-on-one telephone instruction (free dial) and one-on-one online chat. All interactions are scored, with the scores returned to the student along with teacher feedback. These added features make the LTI level a complete course that provides comprehensive training in all major skills.

        * Note: The LTI level is not currently available for individual students. Corporate clients should contact an Account Manager.

    4. Prices
Prices for individual students are shown on the Individual Student Signup Page. Corporate clients seeking pricing information should contact their Account Manager.

Your Scores: This is a very important link that takes you to a list of all the scores you have received for components of the Study-Now course that are marked. If you have signed up with the Standalone access level, these scores will be for the tests in Lesson 5 of each unit. If you have signed up for DTI, the scores for your writing exercises will be included. And if you are an LTI student, the list will include scores given to you by teachers for the speaking and chat interactions.

Study-Now Tour: Takes you to the Study-Now tour page. We offer two tours: the first provides an overview of the features of Study-Now, while the second provides a useful tutorial to doing the Study-Now lessons. We recommend that your take the tours as an excellent introduction to the Study-Now environment.

      3. Student-Home Page – Center Column
The Center Column of the Student Home Page is dedicated to providing you with important information about your progress through the course. You will note that each of the courses in Study-Now is divided into units and lessons. One unit equals five lessons. The main course presently contains 40 units, ten each in Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. The short courses each contain one unit.

Each unit in the main Business English course is given a name. For example, Unit 1 in Elementary is called “Meeting People.” The units names are meant to give you an idea of the content of the unit, and in particular the vocabulary and business situations that will be covered.

In the center of your Student Home Page you will see a list of all the units in the courses, listed by name from Elementary to Advanced. Alongside each unit are five boxes, which are initially empty. As you complete the lessons in each unit, the boxes will be colored. This provides a handy guide, to let you know exactly where you at in the course.

Just above this list you will see a line that says: “your current mission” followed by the name of a unit. This is the unit that you were up to when you were last logged in to Study-Now. Refer to this to quickly return to your place in the course.

Just below this line you will see a statement telling you how many lessons you have completed.

Now look below the list of units. Here you will see your average scores. If you have signed up for the Standalone version of Study-Now, you will see your average scores for the tests in Lesson 5 in each unit. DTI and LTI students will see the average scores for the marked components of those levels.

At the bottom of the center column, you will see the total number of reward points you accumulated to date. Click to go to the page from which you can redeem you points for rewards. Finally, you will see a links to the latest news concerning Study-Now. Check back here often to find out about any new developments at Study-Now!

      4. Student Home Page – Right Column
The right column in the Student Home Page is devoted entirely to the course menu. This is your jump-off point for going to the lessons. The units and lessons you have purchased will be in red text. Other units and lessons will be in gray text and will be inaccessible. To find and start a lesson, read the next section “How to Start the Lessons.”

    5. How to Start the Lessons
To start a lesson, go to your Student Home Page and look at the course menu in the right column. The units and lessons you have purchased will be in red text. Click first on the course you have purchased. If you have purchased units from the main Business English course, you will then need to click on the appropriate level: Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Next, click on the name of the unit at which you wish to start. Finally, choose the appropriate lesson.

A new screen will instantly appear in a pop-up box. This is the introduction to your lesson. Read through “D. Lessons” to find out how to work through the lessons.

  • Lessons
    1. Lesson Structure
Study-Now lessons are divided up into an introduction, interactions and a results page. The introduction presents you with the key learning outcomes of the lesson. The interactions are the main body of the lesson, and present you with learning material and activities to help you improve your skills. Each of the activities is scored. The results page, at the end of the lesson, gives you a score for that lesson. Only scores for Lesson 5, which is always a test, are recorded.

Note that you can do a lesson as many times as you wish.

    2. Getting Started
Once you have clicked on the appropriate lesson in the Student Home Page (read “5. How to Start the Lessons” in the previous section to find out how to do this), a new screen will appear in a pop-up box. This is the introduction to your lesson.

The first thing you might wish to do is resize the screen to make it larger, using the icons provided by your browser at the top right and bottom right of the screen. If you make the lesson screen fit the size of your monitor, you will have less scrolling to do when the lesson actually begins.

Now, let’s become familiar with the lesson screen. The top part of the screen, down to the second red bar, remains unchanged throughout the lesson, until you get to the results page.

At the top right-hand corner, you will see three icons. If you move your mouse so that your cursor runs over the top of these icons, an explanation of each will appear. Here is an explanation of the three icons:

Home: Click this icon to go back to your Student Home Page.

Word Bank: Click this icon, and the Study-Now Word Bank will appear in a new window. Use the Word Bank to search for terms and expressions that appear in the lessons.

Translation: Click on this icon to receive a translation of the instructions that appear on the page. In the introduction section, the translation will be of the key learning outcomes of the lesson.

A little lower down, you will notice four buttons labeled “intro,” “back,” next” and “finish.” These are the navigation buttons, which you will use to move back and forward through the lesson. Click on the “intro” button to go back to the lesson introduction. The “back” and “next” buttons will take you to the previous and next screens, respectively. The “finish” button takes you to the end of the lesson, when you will receive your score for the lesson.

The screen below the red bar changes as you move through the lesson. The first screen you will see is the introduction screen.

    3. Lesson Introductions
After you click on the screen, the first page you will see will have one or both of Study-Now characters, Simon and Suzy, introducing the lesson to you. At the bottom right of the screen you will see two arrows and a globe. Use these arrows (and not the navigation icons on the red bar at the top of the screen) to navigate through the lesson introduction. The globe will provide a translation of the learning outcomes presented in the introduction. When you have reached the end of the introduction, click on the flashing arrow in the middle of the screen to move to your first interaction.

    4. Starting the Interactions
There are two ways to move from the lesson introduction to the first interaction. You can at any time click on the “next” button in the second red bar to end the introduction and move to the interactions. Or you can proceed to the end of the introduction and then click the flashing arrow that appears in the middle of the screen.

    5. Interaction Structure
In Study-Now, interactions generally have three main sections. The first section, below the second red bar, gives the instructions to the interaction. You should read these instructions carefully, to help you complete the interaction. Should you wish to read the instructions in your own language, click on the translation button at the top right corner of the page.

The second section of the interaction is the activity. There are many different types of activities, some of which involve listening to an audio recording. They will be explained in detail below.

At the bottom of the screen is the results bar. Click on the “Check Answer” box to receive your score for that interaction. If you wish to repeat the interaction, click the “Reset” box to start again.

    6. Audio
Many interactions have audio recordings. These are invaluable for testing your listening comprehension, for providing a guide to pronunciation and for improving your own speaking skills. Each of the recordings presents a realistic business situation and use natural spoken English. Note that this means that the English is colloquial, and may differ in some respects from written English.

When an interaction contains an audio, you will see two small boxes. The box on the left is an orange box with a picture of an ear. (Yes, that is an ear!). Click on this box to listen to the audio. Make sure your computer’s sound is turned on! The box on the right is a transcript of the audio. If you click on this, a transcript of the audio will appear in a popup box. Try to understand the audio and complete the following activity by listening to the audio only, and use the transcript only if you get into difficulties. Note that when the transcript popup box appears you will not be able to work on the rest of the activity. This is deliberate: we don’t want you completing the activity simply by reading off the transcript! To return to the activity, you will need to close the transcript box.

If you have a slower Internet connection, you may have to wait while the audio downloads. While you are waiting, an icon will appear to show you the download progress, along with some of the vocabulary that you will hear in the audio. You may wish to check this vocabulary in the Word Bank.

Note that audio clips sometimes appear in the lesson introductions. These clips will not be accompanied by a transcript.

Finally, no transcripts are provided in Lesson 5 of each unit. This is because Lesson 5 is a test.

    7. Interaction Activities
The activities form the main body of each lesson interaction. Before starting an activity, make sure you have read the instructions and read or listened to any other material that was presented to you.

The instructions will tell you how to complete an activity. You will find generally that appear from listening, reading and understanding, an activity will involve one or more of four tasks: dragging and dropping, clicking on hot spots, clicking on buttons, typing answers or using pull-down menus. These tasks are discussed below.

Note also that the Study-Now tutorial provided on our Tour page (which can be accessed from the public page or your Student Home Page provides an excellent visual guide to completing activities.

      1. Dragging and Dropping
The task of dragging and dropping requires you to correctly match answer choices, based on your understanding following a listening or reading exercise. Usually, you will find a collection of answer choices located near some blank spaces. Next to the blank space will be a clue to suggest which answer choice should fill that space. To place the answer choice into the space, use your mouse to move your cursor to the correct answer choice and left-click on it to “grab” it. Then, while holding down the left button of your mouse, “drag” your mouse so that the answer choice moves to the correct blank space. When you have the answer choice positioned above the center of the blank space, release your mouse button to “drop” the choice into the space. The answer choice should then “drop” or “snap” into place.

Note that with drag and drop it is important that your answer choice “drops” into place, otherwise you will not get a correct answer for that question. To make an answer choice drop into place, you must position the answer choice in the middle of the blank space; too far to the left or right of the space, and your answer choice will not drop into place. If this happens, grab the answer choice again and move it to the center of the blank space, and try again.

      2. Clicking on Hot Spots
Sometimes an activity will involve what we call “hot spots,” or clickable areas of text. Usually, the instructions will ask you to click on areas of text that you believe are correct or incorrect examples of English. When you click on the text, it will become bold. If you change your mind, you can click on the text again to unselect it.
      3. Clicking on Buttons
If an activity involves True or False or multiple choice questions, you may be asked to choose the correct answer by clicking on empty buttons. Here again, if you wish to change your mind, click on the button again to unselect it.
      4. Typing Answers
Often, an activity will require you to type in a word or phrase, perhaps to complete a sentence or to answer a question. To type in your answer click in the space provided so that you cursor is flashing within the space. Then begin typing. Take care to avoid typing errors, or your answer will be incorrect!
      5. Using Pull-Down Menus
A number of multiple choice questions require you to select the correct choice by using a pull-down menu. You may have encountered these menus when filling out forms elsewhere on the Internet; they are very common. To choose the correct answer, click on the right-hand side of the menu, and a list of the answer choices will drop down. Then move your mouse and click on the correct answer choice. If you change your mind, repeat the process and the answer choice will be replaced.
    8. Checking Your Answers When you have completed the activity, check your answers by clicking on the “Check Answer” box in red bar at the bottom of the page. You score will appear in the red bar, to the left. If you wish to redo the activity, click the “Reset” box.
    9. Completing a Lesson When you have completed the last interaction in a lesson, you are ready to move to the results page. You can do this by clicking the “finish” button on the red bar near the top of the page. Your results will then be calculated, along with an indication of how long you spent on the lesson.
    10. Significance of Scores Only the scores for Lesson 5, the test lesson in each unit, will be recorded. That’s because the first four lessons are treated as practice lessons, and we encourage you to do them as many times as necessary, until you feel comfortable with the material. If you wish to keep a record of scores from these lessons, you will need to make a note yourself.

You can, of course, complete Lesson 5 as many times as you wish, and each score will be recorded. We will also calculate your average scores for all of your test scores. You can check these scores from your Student Home Page. See the Student Home Page section for details on scores.

  • Video
    1. Speaking Practice Video
All units in the main Business English course have video. You will find one video at the end of Lesson 3 in every unit. This is a speaking practice video. The link to this video is at the results page at the end of Lesson 3. Click on the link and you will go to a new page, at which point the video will start downloading. You can check the progress of the download using the bar at the top of the video. After the video has been downloaded, click the play button to start. The actor will say a sentence. You will then have some time before the next sentence in which to repeat the sentence, by saying it out loud. You can playback the sentence as many times as you wish.

    2. Unit Introduction Videos Some (and ultimately all) units will have an introduction video. This is a longer video that will play at the end of the introduction to Lesson 1 of each unit. The purpose of this video is to introduce a sample of the vocabulary that is covered in the unit. The video will begin downloading as soon as you click on Lesson 1 from your Student Home Page, and will continue to download as you go through the introduction. Unless you have a very fast connection, you will probably find that it is still downloading when you reach the video page at the end of the introduction. But you will still be able to begin watching the video. Note that you will also only need to download the video once. Unless you clear your browser cache, the next time you go to that page, you will be able to watch it again immediately.

Try and watch the introduction video several times, and make note of the vocabulary that you don’t understand. You’ll probably find them in the lessons of that unit, or in the Word Bank. When you have completed the unit, go back and watch the video again. If you have studied the unit vocabulary carefully, you should find your understanding of the video much enhanced.

  • For DTI Students Only
    1. Writing Tasks
If you have signed up to Study Now at the DTI (delayed teacher interaction) level, you will have access to writing tasks, which will be marked by real teachers and sent back to you. You will find the writing tasks at the end of Lesson 2 and Lesson 4 in each unit that you have purchased.

The writing task will consist of a question or writing topic, along with a word count for your answer. Please keep your answer within the word count, and make sure that your answer is appropriate to the question or the topic.

    2. Completing Writing Tasks
Click on the link at the bottom of the results page at the end of Lesson 2 and Lesson 4. A new window will pop up with the question or writing topic, and a space below it. Type your answer into the space provided. If you prefer, you can type your answer using another word processing program, and then copy it to the space. Again, keep your answer within the requested word count.

    3. Sending Tasks to Be Marked
When you have completed your writing task, press the “Send” box and your answer will be emailed to one of our teachers, who will mark it.

    4. Scoring and Feedback Your teacher will mark the writing exercise and provide you with some feedback. When the teacher returns the exercise to you, you will find the feedback in the feedback section of your Student Home Page and the score in your list of scores. You can also check your feedback and score by going again to the writing exercise at the end of the lesson.

  • For LTI Students Only
    1. Speaking Practice
      1. The Call Center
If you have signed up to Study-Now as an LTI student, you will have access to two 15-minute telephone calls with a professional teacher for every unit you have purchased. The purpose of these calls it to provide you with the opportunity to practice speaking in English. The telephone is an ideal medium for this, as it provides one-on-one interaction with your teacher and focuses the communication on speaking.

Note that calls are made using free dial, so students pay no communications charges. However, calls must be made from a landline telephone; calls cannot be made from cell phones.

      2. How to Book a Call
LTI students will have a link to the call center booking page on their Student Home Page. You will find the link among the row of links at the top of the page. Follow it to go to the call booking page. From this page, you will be able to book your call. Calls must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

To book you call, go to the New Booking section of the booking page. Use the drop-down menus to fill out the booking form. The first menu you will see is the practice level. This is the unit to which the call relates. The unit you chose will be the unit the teacher uses to guide the call. This will mean vocabulary and grammar from that unit will be discussed. In principle, you can choose any unit you wish, but we recommend that for maximum benefit you choose the unit you have been working on most recently.

The next two drop-down menus enable you to set the time and date of your call. Note again that you must book your call at least 48 hours in advance.

The final area of the New Booking section allows you to make any additional comments. These comments will go to the teacher, so use this area if you wish your teacher to focus on a particular topic or practice a particular part of English. When you have made your booking, click the “Submit” box. Your booking will then be made automatically. The next time you visit the booking page, you will see your booking in the Current Bookings section to the right of the New Booking section. A reminder of your booking will also appear on your Student Home Page.

      3. How to Make the Most of a Call The key to making the most of your call is preparation. Remember that these calls are a valuable opportunity to practice speaking English and also for reinforcing what you have learned from the Study-Now course. The more you prepare, the more you will benefit from your call.

One way to prepare is to revise the unit to which the call relates. You may wish to make a note key vocabulary, so that you can practice new words during the call. This is particularly useful if you are uncertain about the pronunciation or usage of a word or expression. Use the word or expression during the call and your teacher will be able to correct you and offer guidance.

And if you have a particular area of concern, use the “Topic” section of the New Booking area to ask your teacher to help you. For example, you may wish to practice a particular point of grammar. If you make a note of this in advance, your teacher will help you practice during the call.

In short, Study-Now calls offer a flexible means of practicing your English with a native speaker. Use this flexibility to get maximum benefit from this feature.

      4. How to Cancel/Reschedule a Call This section to be provided

      5. Scoring and Feedback Calls will be scored by your teacher, who will give you a score at the end of the call. The score will be based on your pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. The teacher will also make some helpful comments as feedback. Both your score and your feedback will be sent to you immediately after the call is finished. Use this information to help you with future calls.
    2. Chat If you have signed up to Study-Now as an LTI student, you will have access to two 20-minute online chat sessions with a professional teacher for every unit you have purchased. The purpose of these sessions it to provide you with the opportunity to practice writing in English. Chat is an ideal medium for this, as it provides one-on-one interaction with your teacher and enables your teacher to give you instant feedback on your writing.
      1. How to Book a Chat Session LTI students will have a link to the chat booking page on their Student Home Page. You will find the link among the row of links at the top of the page. Follow it to go to the chat booking page. From this page, you will be able to book your chat. Chat sessions must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

To book you chat, go to the New Booking section of the booking page. Use the drop-down menus to fill out the booking form. The first menu you will see is the practice level. This is the unit to which the chat session relates. The unit you chose will be the unit the teacher uses to guide the chat. This will mean vocabulary and grammar from that unit will be discussed. In principle, you can choose any unit you wish, but we recommend that for maximum benefit you choose the unit you have been working on most recently.

The next two drop-down menus enable you to set the time and date of your chat. Note again that you must book your chat session at least 48 hours in advance.

      2. How to Make the Most of a Chat Session The key to making the most of your chat session is preparation. Remember that these sessions are a valuable opportunity to practice writing English and also for reinforcing what you have learned from the Study-Now course. The more you prepare, the more you will benefit from your chat.

One way to prepare is to revise the unit to which the chat session relates. You may wish to make a note key vocabulary, so that you can practice new words during the chat. This is particularly useful if you are uncertain about the pronunciation or usage of a word or expression. Use the word or expression during the chat and your teacher will be able to correct you and offer guidance.

  • For Employers
Study-Now offers many features for employers, designed to help them track the progress of their employees through the courses. These features can be accessed from the Study-Now Company Pages, which are made available to a designated administrator at each corporate or organizational client. The Company Pages are described below.

    Study-Now Company pages
The Study-Now Company Pages are distinct from the Study-Now site used by students, and are made accessible to a designated administrator(s) at our corporate or organizational clients. Access to the Company Pages is by logging in using an ID and password.

The Company Pages consists of a number of individual pages that give you the chance to both monitor the progress of students from your company or organization and to control certain aspects of your enrolment. The first page that you will see after logging into the Company Pages is the Company Home, which provides an overview of your Study-Now enrolment. This gives you information about your purchase at a glance.

Along the top of the Company Home page, you will find a number of links. Use these links to navigate through the Company Pages and access other features of this site. Let us look first at the top row of links:

Company Home: Returns you to the initial Company Page, with an overview of your Study-Now enrolment.

About: Provides you with a brief description of the Study-Now Company Pages.

Student Site: Takes you to the login page for the student area of Study-Now. This is ideal if an administrator is also a student.

Kyunet: Provides information about Kyunet Pty. Ltd., the company that developed Study-Now.

Trans-Asia: Provides information about Trans-Asia Inc., the agent for Study-Now in Japan.

Now, let’s look at the second row of links.

Student List: Use this page to monitor the progress of students from your company or organization through the Study-Now course. You will see a table with a list of your students with information showing their progress through the purchased units, as well as their average score and the date they last accessed Study-Now. This information is ideal for helping you keep track of Study-Now usage.

You will note also that that you can click on the name of each student. Do this to obtain even more detailed information about the progress that each student is making in Study-Now. Click on a name and go to a new page with a table showing each activity completed by the student. Where an activity has generated feedback, you will be able to access that feedback (which is the same feedback as that received by the student) to see teacher comments and scores.

View Reports: The Study-Now Company Pages enable you to generate reports to track usage trends. These reports can be created from the View Reports page of the Company Pages. We have already placed here some sample reports that you might wish to view, but should have other reports that you would like to see, be sure to contact your Account Manager, as this page can be customized to meet your requirements.

Company Details: The Company Details page enables you to edit contact information about your company or organization.

Personal Details: The Personal Details page enables you to edit contact information about you, the designated administrator.

Contact Us: Use this page to contact your Account Manager.

Logout: Use this page to logout from the Company Pages.
